KENTUCKY DISTILLERS’ ASSOCIATION APPLAUDS CREATION OF KENTUCKY BOURBON TRAIL® CAUCUS

September 02, 2009

FRANKFORT, Ky. – Kentucky’s signature Bourbon industry today applauded legislative leaders for creating the Kentucky Bourbon Trail® Caucus in the General Assembly.

“This is an important step in showcasing Bourbon’s tremendous economic and tourism impact in the Commonwealth and its proud place in our state’s heritage,” said Eric Gregory, President of the Kentucky Distillers’ Association.

“Bourbon is America’s only native spirit and is a growing international symbol of Kentucky craftsmanship and tradition. We appreciate today’s action by legislative leadership – and particularly the support of Rep. David Floyd of Bardstown – in creating this key advocacy group to promote and protect the Kentucky Bourbon Trail and our signature Bourbon industry.”

Rep. Floyd, who is the House Minority Whip, proposed the Kentucky Bourbon Trail Caucus to legislative leaders during today’s meeting of the Legislative Research Commission. It was approved unanimously. The caucus will include 41 state Representatives and 16 Senators from counties with Bourbon facilities.

Kentucky Bourbon has been a vital part of the Bluegrass economy for more than 200 years. Today, the signature Bourbon industry provides more than 3,200 jobs, pays more than $100 million in taxes and generates $3 billion in gross state product.

In addition, the Kentucky Bourbon Trail® has become one of the state’s most famous tourism attractions, drawing visitors from all 50 states and more than 25 countries. This year marks the Kentucky Bourbon Trail’s anniversary.

The KDA, organized in 1880, represents the state’s distillers that together produce 95 percent of the world’s Bourbon: Beam Global Spirits & Wine (Jim Beam and Maker’s Mark), Brown-Forman, Sazerac-Buffalo Trace, Diageo North America, Four Roses, Heaven Hill and Wild Turkey.
