KENTUCKY DISTILLERS’ ASSOCIATION APPLAUDS FORMATION OF THE CONGRESSIONAL BOURBON CAUCUS

June 17, 2009

FRANKFORT, Ky. – Kentucky’s signature Bourbon distillers today applauded Congressmen John Yarmuth and Brett Guthrie for creating and co-chairing the official, bipartisan Congressional Bourbon Caucus.

“This is an important step in educating Congressional members about Bourbon’s impact on the nation’s economy and its proud place in our country’s history,” said Eric Gregory, president of the Kentucky Distillers’ Association.

“Bourbon is America’s only native spirit and is a growing international symbol of Kentucky craftsmanship and tradition,” Gregory said. “We appreciate the leadership of Congressmen Yarmuth and Guthrie in creating this key advocacy group to promote and protect Bourbon.”

Gregory also thanked Kentucky Reps. Ben Chandler, Geoff Davis and Ed Whitfield for signing on as part of the original 17 founding members of the Congressional Bourbon Caucus.

Kentucky Bourbon has been a vital part of the Bluegrass economy for more than 200 years. Today, the Bourbon industry provides more than 3,200 jobs, pays more than $100 million in taxes and generates $3 billion in gross state product.

In addition, the Kentucky Bourbon Trail® has become one of the state’s most famous tourism attractions, drawing visitors from all 50 states and more than 25 countries. This year marks the Kentucky Bourbon Trail’s 10th anniversary.

The KDA, organized in 1880, represents the state’s distillers that together produce 95 percent of the world’s Bourbon: Beam Global Spirits & Wine (Jim Beam and Maker’s Mark), Brown-Forman, Buffalo Trace, Diageo North America, Four Roses, Heaven Hill and Wild Turkey.
