Town Branch® Rye is launched by Alltech Lexington Brewing and Distilling Co. as Rye Whiskey Makes a Comeback

[LEXINGTON, Ky.] – Get your rocks glasses ready, spirits enthusiasts. Alltech Lexington Brewing and Distilling Company is launching its fourth spirit with Town Branch® Rye, a spicy, robust whiskey style that has regained popularity in recent years, even in Kentucky, where bourbon reigns supreme. Traditionally known as the key ingredient in a Whiskey Sour or an Old Fashioned cocktail, rye whiskeys are often chosen by whiskey connoisseurs and mixologists for their depth of flavor and spiciness.

With Town Branch Rye, enthusiasts will appreciate the spicy floral aroma, the light notes of vanilla and oak, and the peppery warm, dry finish. Distilled by former President George Washington and popular across saloons until Prohibition, the history of rye whiskey is as rich as its flavor and aroma. Made from a mash of fermented rye grain, barley and corn, rye whiskey has a more assertive flavor than bourbon – its sweeter counterpart. The high percentage of corn in bourbon lends the sweeter, rounder taste to it.

Bourbon overtook rye as the whiskey of choice after Prohibition, when tillable land began to be used primarily for corn, which was more profitable, noted Mark Coffman, master distiller at Town Branch Distillery.

“I think plenty of bourbon drinkers are going to love this spirit, even though it’s not a bourbon, which we certainly hold near and dear to our hearts here,” Coffman said. “Rye whiskeys are one of the hottest things on the market right now, and we are happy to be able to showcase another flavorful drink for our fans, who are always looking for something new.”

Coffman will be available on Saturday, March 8, from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. to sign bottles of Town Branch Rye at Town Branch Distillery at 401 Cross Street in Lexington. Town Branch Rye and other spirits can be purchased at the distillery that day. Other special launch events for Town Branch Rye will be occurring in Lexington and Louisville throughout March and are listed on the company blog.

Town Branch Rye will build on the success of Town Branch® bourbon, Pearse Lyons Reserve® malt whiskey, and Bluegrass Sundown® coffee liqueur. The four spirits are all produced at Town Branch Distillery in downtown Lexington. The distillery is one of eight stops on The Kentucky Bourbon Trail® and part of the Alltech Lexington Brewing and Distilling Company campus, which also includes the company’s brewery that produces the Kentucky Ale® line of brews.

Town Branch Rye will primarily be distributed in limited supplies in Kentucky, southern Ohio, and Indiana at first, though distribution may grow. In Kentucky, it will hit some retailer and bar shelves as early as next week.
