The autumn months in Kentucky are really something special. As the temperatures cool, the barrels aging our delicious Bourbons begin to contract squeezing out the amber nectar now imbued with its signature hue. Cooler weather also brings the changing of the leaves in and around our rolling hills, which is not to be missed.
If you want to take in all of this natural wonder, there’s no better place than the Bernheim Arboretum & Research Forest! With over 40 miles of trails, tons of educational programming, world-class art installations, and conveniently located in Bullitt County and directly across the street from the James B. Beam Distilling Co., Bernheim is a must-add attraction. Here are our fall favorites:
From Denmark To Kentucky: The Forest Giants
Constructed in 2019 by world-renowned Danish artist, Thomas Dambo, the Forest Giants are one of the most popular attractions in the arboretum. Dambo has built these wonders all over the world, and it’s an honor to have three of them right here in Kentucky. The sculptures throughout the arboretum were built using recycled wood from the region, with one even utilizing staves from used Bourbon barrels. Walk the easy two-mile loop to see Mama Loumari with her children, Little Nis and Little Elina, and her third baby Giant, who is currently living in Mama’s belly. But hurry, they will only be around for two more years!
Get The Best Views Of Our Fall Foliage
See those colors up close and personal when you walk among the treetops on the Canopy Tree Walk. This short boardwalk extends into the forest canopy, suspending you an astonishing 75 feet above the forest floor.
Or if you prefer to get your steps in, experience Bernheim from atop their oldest structure, the historic fire tower. A volunteer naturalist will lead you 961 feet up the flights of stairs for one of the best views in the state. The incredible scenery will leave you amazed as you take in the knobby landscape that surrounds Bernheim and even catch sight of the forest on a clear day.
Experience Their “Outdoor Art Museum”
Bernheim’s Arts in Nature programs provide a vital platform for artistic experimentation and curious exploration that becomes a part of the entire ecosystem of Bernheim. Art inspires a deeper connection with nature, providing visitors with a sense of discovery. Journey through the forest and enjoy a variety of sculptures, paintings, and other works of art.
While Bernheim features works from world-renowned artists, they also choose four regional artists yearly for residencies, with one residency being dedicated to work addressing environmental issues and climate change.
Colorfest 2022 Is Back!
NOVEMBER 5+6
Back after a two-year hiatus, Bernheim’s annual fall festival is being held on Saturday & Sunday, November 5 & 6.
ColorFest is two days of fun surrounded by the spectacular beauty of fall at Bernheim. Visitors can grab a drink and unique local food offerings while listening to live music, participating in hands-on nature activities, and perusing many Kentucky art and craft vendors. Bring the whole family to enjoy crowd favorite activities like the corn pit, mud pie kitchen, pumpkin rolling, slingshot, nature games, and giant slides.
