Safe Ride KY Offers Free Lyft Rides To Prevent Impaired Driving During Labor Day Weekend.

Today the Safe Ride KY coalition announced that it is offering Kentuckians $10,000 worth of free rides to complement DUI enforcement efforts and prevent impaired driving over Labor Day weekend.

Individuals can claim $10 in ride credits by downloading the Lyft app on their phones, entering promo code SAFERIDELABOR19, and ordering a ride home.

Rides can be taken between 5 p.m. Friday, August 30, and 5 a.m. Tuesday, September 3 – wherever Lyft is available in Kentucky, while supplies last.

The code and more information can be found online at www.saferideky.org.

Safe Ride KY is a non-profit alliance established by the Kentucky Distillers’ Association (KDA) and sponsored by Lyft, the Kentucky Office of Highway Safety, Becker Law Office, and Wine and Spirits Wholesalers of Kentucky.

“Kentucky’s Bourbon and distilled spirits industry is proud to lead this multi-stakeholder effort that encourages people to plan ahead and make safe rides a regular part of their celebrations,” KDA President Eric Gregory said.

Since its creation in December 2017, Safe Ride KY has delivered 7,772 free rides on major holidays including St. Patrick’s Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving and Christmas.

This is the second year the group has offered free rides over Labor Day weekend. Last year, it removed 1,026 potentially impaired drivers from the road.

People can track the number of rides delivered, read Kentucky’s DUI statistics, and make donations in honor of loved ones lost to impaired driving at www.saferideky.org.

“By spreading the message about the impact of impaired driving, we hope to encourage more drivers to make the responsible choice of a sober ride home,” said Jason Siwula, Acting Executive Director of Kentucky’s Office of Highway Safety.

The group’s efforts are particularly important after the recent passage of Kentucky Senate Bill 85, which strengthens the state’s DUI laws for the first time in decades and takes effect in January 2020. SB 85 standardizes license suspension lengths for alcohol-related DUIs and incentivizes ignition interlock devices that connect drunk drivers with monitoring and treatment services.

“The lawyers in our office see the tragic results and legal consequences of DUIs all the time,” says Gregory Bubalo, Managing Partner at Becker Law Office and a top campaign sponsor.

“Safe Ride KY reminds everyone how easily these situations can be avoided, just by riding home with Lyft or another transportation service at the end of the night.”
