Guest Speaker Details: “This Derby edition of our Spirits & Books Series will have a focus on horse racing, and gonzo journalism which Louisville’s own Hunter S. Thompson made famous. We’re pairing that with a brandy tasting from Copper & Kings Distillery for an intimate event in their facility,” said Jamar Mack, President of KOBBE. The event will feature a gonzo-inspired essay reading from local writer, Dedra McDowell. She will be reading from her piece, “A Tale of two Derbies,” a nostalgic look at our city’s Derby celebrations over the years. Attendees will also be treated to a brandy tasting led by brand ambassador and brandy expert, Darci Stuhlman. The tasting, included with admission, will feature the distillery’s most popular drinks and will walk attendees through the basics of brandy. The evening will culminate with Betting 101 workshop led by horse racing enthusiast, Sean Phillips. Phillips will walk attendees through the process for betting on a race horse from start to finish with insight on how to read a racing form, how to choose your horse, the difference in an exacta and trifecta, and how to make your bet go the furthest. Racing programs will be provided.
