Welcome to springtime in Kentucky—a time of renewal, rich flavors, and the perfect opportunity to explore everything the Trail™ has to offer.

Whether you’re a seasoned connoisseur or a curious enthusiast, there’s no better time to soak in and savor the Bluegrass State than spring. Even the Bourbon itself agrees—as the barrels shake off the chill of winter, they start expanding as the weather warms, welcoming in the flavors of the oak and increasing the complexity of America’s finest spirit.

Peak season or peaceful sipping? The choice is yours.

As with most destinations, timing is everything. March and early April bring cooler temperatures and generally lighter crowds across many regions, making it easier to enjoy leisurely tastings and behind-the-scenes tours without as much hustle and bustle. Keep in mind that April also marks the start of Keeneland’s Spring Meet in Lexington, a highlight of the season that draws visitors from near and far. By late April and early May, the frenzy of Derby season takes over, especially around Louisville, with an influx of visitors and festive energy in the air. If you choose to visit at this time, it’s imperative to make reservations well in advance. Late May offers warmer days and lush scenery as everything comes into full bloom, although distilleries and nearby outdoor attractions may be busier heading into summer. No matter when you visit, spring is a spectacular season to sip and explore.

Spring brings crisp mornings, mild days, and smooth pours.

Kentucky’s spring weather is mild and inviting, but it can be unpredictable. In April, expect pleasant temperatures ranging from 65-75°F during the day and cooler evenings around 45-55°F. By May, the days warm up to 75-85°F, with lows in the mid-50s to mid-60s. Spring showers are common, so packing a light rain jacket is a smart choice. Layering is key—mornings can be crisp, but afternoons often feel warm, especially if you’re touring multiple distilleries. Comfortable walking shoes are a must, as many distillery grounds include gravel paths and rolling terrain. Whether you’re exploring historic buildings or enjoying an outdoor tasting, dressing for the season will keep you comfortable on your Bourbon Trail™ getaway.

Sip and savor al fresco.

Many of our distilleries offer scenic outdoor patios where you can sip amid the stunning views. At Four Roses, Bar 1888 provides a charming patio nestled among the distillery’s Spanish mission-style architecture, where you can enjoy their signature offerings surrounded by rolling bluegrass hills.

With panoramic views of downtown Louisville and the Ohio River, Copper and King’s Rooftop Bar & Restaurant is an urban oasis perfect for sampling their distinctive Bourbon aged in brandy barrels. Jeptha Creed’s expansive grounds offer a true farm-to-glass experience overlooking their estate-grown grain fields. Sip craft cocktails and take in the views on The Whiskey Thief’s cozy outdoor terrace. Beneath towering oak trees, Casey Jones Distillery’s rustic porch provides a peaceful retreat where visitors can appreciate Kentucky’s natural beauty while savoring their handcrafted spirits.

Venture beyond the barrel.

For nature enthusiasts, Bourbon-themed outdoor excursions provide a unique way to taste the region—whether by cruising the Kentucky River, touring a 400+ acre nature preserve on horseback, learning about the importance of pollinators on an 1100-acre farm, and even walking the ruins at the site of an 1888 castle. And while Bourbon is the star of the show, there’s plenty more to explore. Equine enthusiasts should absolutely consider the various offerings from Horse Country Tours, where they can visit world-renowned thoroughbred farms, watch trainers at work, and maybe even meet a Derby winner. From a larger-than-life replica of Michaelangelo’s The David in Louisville to museums showcasing important moments in Kentucky history, spring offers something for every traveler, from Bardstown to Lexington and beyond.

Pro tips to make the most of your trip.

Book distillery tours in advance, especially for weekend visits, as spots fill up quickly. And don’t forget to reserve a table at one of the distillery restaurants for a full experience—you’ll want to plan time for a hearty meal between tastings. It’s best to schedule no more than two or, at most, three distilleries in one day to keep your trip relaxed and enjoyable. If you’re traveling around early May, be mindful of Derby season—Louisville and Lexington will be buzzing with energy, but also larger crowds and higher lodging prices.

While traditional tastings are a must, don’t miss out on seasonal cocktails that highlight Bourbon’s versatility. Opt for a Mint Julep, the iconic Derby drink crafted with smooth Bourbon, muddled fresh mint, a hint of sugar, and piled high with crushed ice—crisp, cool, and endlessly refreshing. Or sip on a Bourbon Smash, a vibrant mix of Bourbon, freshly squeezed lemon, fragrant mint, and simple syrup. You’ll often find creative variations that highlight the season’s freshest fruits—think juicy berries or ripe peaches—adding an extra burst of flavor to this classic cocktail.

Arranging transportation (whether it’s a shuttle, tour service, or designated driver) is key so you can focus on the flavors and scenery without the stress of navigating. As always, remember to drink responsibly and enjoy the experience.
